Tips on How to Increase Your Salary

Earning more money is about more than just the number of hours you work. You need to be able to show you are deserving of a higher salary, and sometimes this might even require you to ask for it. There are a few ways you can increase your earning potential, without having to start a side hustle or work longer hours.

Look for Other Professional Development Opportunities

Always be on the lookout for ways of improving your skillset or even adding new ones. You could look for industry webinars, an online course, or extra training. You could ask your colleagues or manager for suggestions on the right type of training to get to advance in your career. It is also a good idea to consider getting a degree in a related field. Look into student loans, which can help you cover the cost of school as offset the financial hit of tuition.

Ask for More Money

Don’t sit around and wait to be offered more money since they may never offer it to you. However, be prepared to show your boss what you have achieved, and spend some time researching comparable salaries. Start by offering something on the high end of the range, which will give you room to negotiate. If they say no, you could ask what you can do to qualify for more money. You could even ask for a promotion if you feel there is an opening. Showcase your abilities to send your boss the message you are qualified for it. Even if there is not an opening, you could create a new one and present it to the manager. Have a straightforward, honest discussion with your manager and think of it as a two-way conversation.

Focus on Relationship Building

It is important to build relationships, both in and out of the department. If you want to move up, you will need the support of others in the department. If you are asking a coworker for a question or some information, you might try walking over to ask for it in person instead of sending them a message online. It is important to treat everyone at work as you would like to be treated, no matter their position. Building these relationships and a great reputation with the organization can give you the support you need for different roles, and it can even give you future opportunities with different departments in the company.

Make Yourself Useful

You don’t need to take on lots of extra work, but you can still make yourself valuable at work by showing you are a hard worker and have strong character. Be adaptable and helpful around the office, and show yourself as someone who everyone will want to work with. Part of this might include putting yourself out there and showing your coworkers that you care about them. You might need to make time to attend company events or talk to other coworkers. By doing so, you might be able to hear about company information, such as projects or other opportunities.
