Finances & Money

We finally dipped into our entertainment budget

A few months ago, I found out that my wife’s long-time favorite Christian band, Jars of Clay, was coming to DC. Outside of Blockbuster Online, and maybe one trip to the movie theater per year, we generally don’t do anything entertaining that costs money. We’re really boring.

But I knew my wife would love to go to the concert, which was at the George Washington University Lisner Auditorium last night, so I went online and purchases two tickets through TicketMaster. Now, I’ll refrain from complaining about TicketMaster and their exorbitant fees ($5.50 on a $30 ticket!) because that’s not the point to this post.

The two tickets cost us about $72 total, which for a concert today, isn’t too bad I guess. However, the great part was our seats. We got 6th row, center, on the aisle. For near-front-row seats, $30 wasn’t too bad.

It was only a week ago that I found out they were going to have 2 opening bands: NeedToBreathe and Burlap to Cashmere. I’m not a big fan of Jars of Clay, but the two opening acts made up for it.

Burlap to Cashmere announced “We’re Greek” and proceeded to pound out amazing acoustic guitar riffs and vocals. The 2 guys were very energetic and actually quite humorous. I would pay to see them as the main act. I just can’t believe how fast their hands played those guitars!

NeedToBreathe is from South Carolina and has a certain Southern sound. The lead singer, Bear, has a raspy, yet lively voice, and their song “Shine On” has been featured in the movie “Employee of the Month” and in “Guiding Light” (my wife’s favorite soap opera). It’s a very upbeat song and the band has a very fresh sound, and I invite you to browse their site to see the video to Shine On (and other songs) or listen to some tracks from their CD. They have a flash-driven site, so I can’t just direct-link to their pages.

We’ll actually be taking out a bit extra from the entertainment budget to buy the NeedToBreathe CD – Daylight. Right now, it’s selling for $12.99 on Amazon.com and $15 at the online fan store.

I forgot all about Burlap to Cashmere – they are amazing musicians. That show must have been amazing.

I used to live in DC. I went to a bunch of concerts up there. I miss it!

i have heard of that jars of clay song called flood…

just can’t stand christian rock…it seems too “forced”, like, it isn’t natural…

    but to each his own.

@realist: Yeah, Flood was the main one I knew. I’ve heard a few more since then, but nothing that really got me to be a fan.

@Henry: Thanks for the Happy Easter. We just got back from our families’ places today (Monday), which is why I haven’t posted yet.

I would recommend NeedToBreathe much more than Jars of Clay. The other band, Burlap to Cashmere, doesn’t have a CD yet, so I can’t recommend them.
