Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling 228,367 Sienna Hybrid minivans because a defect could cause the second-row seat backs to become unsecured during a crash, increasing the risk of injury to passengers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects certain 2022–2026 Toyota Sienna Hybrid vehicles configured with seven-passenger seating.

The recall was reported on October 20, 2026, under NHTSA campaign number 26V690000.

Second-Row Seat Backs May Become Unsecured During a Crash

The safety concern involves the reclining mechanisms in the second-row seats, which may disengage under certain crash conditions.

According to Toyota’s recall documentation, forces generated when a seat belt pretensioner activates during a collision can cause the seat back’s reclining mechanism to release from its locked position.

If the seat back does not remain secured, it may fail to provide adequate protection to an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

The recall specifically covers certain seven-passenger Sienna Hybrid models manufactured for the 2022 through 2026 model years. Not every vehicle within those model years is necessarily affected.

Toyota Will Provide Free Repairs

Toyota has outlined two different remedies depending on the vehicle’s configuration.

For most affected Sienna Hybrid minivans, authorized Toyota dealerships will update the software in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) electronic control unit (ECU).

For vehicles equipped with Toyota’s Mobility as a Service (MaaS) package, dealers will replace both second-row seat backs instead.

All recall repairs will be performed free of charge.

Toyota is developing the software remedy, and owners should contact their dealership to confirm when the appropriate repair will be available.

Owner Notification Letters Expected in December

Toyota expects to begin mailing owner notification letters on December 7, 2026.

Owners can check whether their vehicles are affected before receiving a letter by entering their 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into the NHTSA recall database.

They can also check directly through Toyota’s official recall lookup tool.

For additional information, Toyota owners may contact customer service at 1-800-331-4331 and reference recall numbers 26TB24 or 26TA24.

Because the defect involves passenger protection during a collision, affected owners should review Toyota’s latest safety instructions and arrange the free repair once it becomes available.
