Wow, summer is almost over and it feels like it just began. I don’t think we’ve even had a 100 degree day yet!

I’ll be starting my final graduate degree course in a month, while continuing my current course which is the “capstone” project. I’ve really let myself get behind, but that’s what happens when it’s a self-paced course. If you’re not self-disciplined, things will slip.

So, let’s check out some numbers for July 2009, shall we?

Traffic Sources

At a high level:

Search Engines: 66% (up from 60% in June)

Referring Sites: 19% (down from 23%)

Direct Traffic: 15%

While my search traffic is increasing, my referrals from other sites are

Top Personal Finance Blog Referrers

And now to what everyone (or at least every PF blog) reads this article for: my top referrers for July. You’ll see last month’s rank after the new rank in (). If they weren’t ranked last month, you’ll see a (-).

  1. (-) The Simple Dollar
  2. (2) My Money Blog
  3. (4) Cheap Healthy Good
  4. (6) Wise Bread
  5. (8) Frugal Dad
  6. (3) Budgets are Sexy
  7. (5) Five Cent Nickel
  8. (7) Free Money Finance
  9. (9) No Credit Needed
  10. (-) Debt in Your 20’s is the Kiss of Death

Top Non-PF Blog Referrers

Since this list is usually made up of search engines, I’ve decided to show non-PF blogs AND non-search engines instead!

  1. Zen Habits
  2. US News
  3. Campus Grotto
  4. Twitter
  5. Swag Bucks
  6. Daily Blog Tips
  7. Delicious
  8. Lifehacker.com
  9. StumbleUpon (in the #10 spot of all referrers. #1-9 are search engines or PF blogs)
  10. Facebook (yep, Clever Dude is now on Facebook!)

Again, thanks to all my readers, fellow bloggers, commenters, search engines and scrapers for making this site such a success!

About Michael Townsend

Michael Townsend founded CleverDude.com in June 2006 while working as a technical analyst in the Washington, D.C. area. A Penn State graduate, he built the site as a side project alongside a white-collar career that included earning a master’s degree and multiple promotions.

In five years he wrote nearly 1,300 articles on personal finance and life lessons drawn from his own experience. The blog grew from a hobby into a recognized early voice in the personal-finance community and generated meaningful revenue. He sold the site in 2010, continued as a guest contributor through 2015, and returned in 2023 after further career advances, paying off his home, and extensive travel.

Looks like the site is doing well, congratulations! You are certainly getting a lot of search traffic, what techniques do you use if you don’t mind me asking? Is it just seo?

    Well done, nice blog!

Wow, that is a lot of hits from search engines. I agree with Lee, please write a post about how you got such a high amount of traffic from search engines alone.

That is really good though. congratulations on the success!
