Teaching My Son the Art of the Happy Hour

Happy Hour

My son turned 21 last week and is now able to legally consume adult beverages. It is my duty as his parent to educate him regarding the money saving phenomenon known as the happy hour.

Drink Specials

The primary reason for the happy hour is obviously drink specials. The most common time is late afternoon, right before dinner. It’s meant to draw people in to have an inexpensive drink or two with the hope they will stay for dinner or longer.

How To Take Advantage: A happy hour is a great way to start a night with friends and be easy on the wallet. If you’re not into the bar hopping scene (me!), you can use it as the “going out” portion of the evening with friends before heading to someone’s home for games and socializing.

Happy Hour Food Specials

Many bar and grills will also have appetizer specials. Not only is this a draw to get people in the door, but also to get people to stay longer and order more.

How To Take Advantage: Appetizer specials are an inexpensive way to get a layer of food in your stomach to slow the absorption of alcohol, helping you keep from heading home early. Since many appetizers are large enough to be a meal for one, happy hour food specials are also a great way to have a cheap dinner regardless of whether you’re partaking in adult beverages that evening.

Late Night Happy Hour

Some establishments are trying to pull in the late night crowd by having food and drink specials as part of a late night happy hour.

How To Take Advantage: The main advantage of late night happy hour for me is honestly food specials.  After a night out with friends, getting an inexpensive bite to eat before going home makes sure I get a good night’s sleep, wake up feeling good the next day, and extends the time hanging out with my friends.

Happy hours can help keep your bill down when socializing with friends or, you can use them as a way to have cheap dinner. As always, drink responsibly and find another way to get home if you can’t drive!

How about you, Clever Friends, how do you use happy hours to enhance fun with friends and save money?
