7 Vehicle Features That Can Be Remotely Disabled Without Your Consent

Modern vehicles are packed with technology. Many of these features make driving easier and safer. But there’s a side most people don’t think about: some of these features can be turned off remotely, and you might not even know it’s happening. This isn’t just about convenience or safety. It’s about control. If you own or lease a car, you should know which vehicle features can be disabled without your say-so. This knowledge can help you avoid surprises and make smarter choices about your car.

The ability to remotely disable vehicle features is growing. Automakers, lenders, and even law enforcement can sometimes access your car’s systems. This can affect your daily life, privacy, and safety. Here are seven vehicle features that can be remotely disabled without your consent, and what you can do about it.

1. Remote Start and Stop

Remote start is a popular feature. It lets you start your car from inside your house or office. But the same system that lets you start your car can also stop it. Some manufacturers and third-party services can disable remote start if you miss payments or if there’s a security concern. This can leave you stranded, especially in bad weather. If you rely on remote start, check your car’s manual and ask your dealer about who controls this feature. If you use a third-party app, read the terms of service. You might be surprised by what you find.

2. GPS Navigation and Tracking

Many cars now come with built-in GPS navigation. This is handy for finding your way, but also means your car’s location can be tracked. Some lenders use GPS tracking to find and repossess vehicles if payments are missed. Sometimes, they can disable the navigation system or even the car itself. Law enforcement can also request access to this data. If you’re concerned about privacy, ask your dealer if your car has a GPS tracker and who can access it.

3. Keyless Entry and Ignition

Keyless entry and push-button start are now standard in many vehicles. These systems use wireless signals to unlock and start your car. But they can also be disabled remotely. If your car is reported stolen, the manufacturer or police can sometimes lock you out or prevent the engine from starting. Some lenders use this feature to disable cars if payments are overdue. If you’re buying a car with keyless entry, ask about who can control this system and under what circumstances.

4. Infotainment System

Your car’s infotainment system controls music, navigation, and sometimes climate settings. Automakers can push software updates to these systems, but they can also disable features. For example, if you don’t renew a subscription, certain apps or services may stop working. In rare cases, a system can be disabled for security reasons or if there’s a dispute over software licensing. If you depend on your infotainment system, keep track of your subscriptions and software updates. Always back up important data, like contacts or saved locations.

5. Telematics and Emergency Services

Telematics systems like OnStar or BMW Assist offer emergency help, roadside assistance, and vehicle diagnostics. But these services can be turned off remotely. If you cancel your subscription or miss a payment, you might lose access to emergency help. Some services can even be disabled if your car is involved in a legal dispute. If you rely on telematics for safety, check your subscription status and know what happens if it’s turned off.

6. Speed and Performance Limiters

Some vehicles have built-in speed or performance limiters. Parents use these to keep teen drivers safe, and rental companies use them to prevent abuse. But automakers and fleet managers can also set or change these limits remotely. In some cases, a car’s speed can be limited if it’s reported stolen or if there’s a safety recall. If you notice your car isn’t performing as expected, check if a limiter has been activated. Ask your dealer or fleet manager about who can control these settings.

7. Charging Access for Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) often connect to charging networks through apps or accounts. If you miss a payment or violate the terms of service, your access to charging stations can be cut off remotely. Some manufacturers can also limit charging speed or access during peak times. This can leave you without a way to charge your car when you need it most. If you drive an EV, keep your accounts in good standing and know your backup charging options.

Protecting Your Control Over Your Vehicle

Technology gives us more convenience, but also means others can control parts of our cars. The ability to remotely disable vehicle features is a real concern. Always read the fine print when you buy or lease a car. Ask questions about who can access your vehicle’s systems and under what conditions. Stay on top of payments and subscriptions. If you’re worried about privacy, look for cars with fewer remote features or ask about ways to limit remote access. Being informed is the best way to keep control over your vehicle.
