5 Common Steering Column Issues That Make Driving Dangerous
Your steering column is an instrumental part of your car. It has a direct impact on your vehicle’s safety and overall control system. That said, there can be things that go wrong with it that can make your car seriously dangerous to drive. Ignoring these steering column issues could cause steering failure, loss of control, expensive repairs, or worse. So, be on the lookout for these five things.
1. Loose Steering Wheel
Obviously, if your steering wheel is loose or wobbly it is indicative of trouble with your steering column. You might notice trouble turning or issues bringing the wheel back to center. A lot of the time, a loose steering wheel results from bushings, broken couplings, or a damaged universal joint. If you don’t take care of it, it will make your car harder to control, especially at high speeds or sharp turns.
2. Steering Wheel Won’t Lock or Unlock
Another sign to look out for is a steering wheel that won’t lock or unlock. When this happens, it could be due to a failing ignition switch. It could also be a broken lock mechanism within the steering column itself. What’s scary is that this could prevent you from starting your car or potentially stop you from turning the wheel altogether. It’s an issue that could leave you stranded on the side of the road or even put you in danger.
3. Strange Noises When Turning
Grinding, clicking, or squeaking when you turn the wheel shouldn’t be ignored either. These sounds could be coming from inside the steering column. Oftentimes, this happens because of worn bearings, dry joints, or loose components inside the column shaft. Over time, these issues can cause more friction and wear, reducing your car’s handling performance.
4. Tilt Steering Mechanism Failure
Many modern vehicles have adjustable tilt steering to help drivers find the most comfortable driving position. If the mechanism becomes loose or stops locking into position, it can be very dangerous. The steering wheel might shift while you’re driving, throwing off your control and causing distractions. This usually stems from a worn locking mechanism or a damaged tilt joint inside the column.
5. Electrical Issues Inside the Column
Modern steering columns often house electrical components like airbag wires, horn circuits, and steering wheel controls. Over time, wires can wear out, become pinched, or develop shorts inside the column. This could trigger your airbag light, disable your horn, or cut off steering wheel button functions. More seriously, it could interfere with critical safety systems.
Don’t Ignore the Warning Signs
It’s important not to ignore anything going on with your steering. In general, I wouldn’t ignore any issues with your car.
