Your Phone's USB-C Port Can Do More Than Charge — 5 Features Worth Knowing
A smartphone’s USB-C port can do much more than charge its battery. Depending on the model and cable, it can connect external storage, display video on a larger screen, support wired accessories, and supply power to compatible device – Shutterstock

A USB-C port looks like a charging socket, but treating it as one is a little like buying a Swiss Army knife and using only the toothpick. Depending on your phone, that small opening can connect external storage, send video to a television, power accessories, and handle wired audio. Some of these tricks require nothing more than an inexpensive cable or adapter.

There is one catch: USB-C describes the connector, not every feature your phone supports. Two phones can have identical ports yet offer different capabilities, and the wrong cable can spoil an otherwise perfectly good plan. Here are five ways to put your phone’s port to work, along with the compatibility details worth checking before spending money on accessories.

1. Put Your Phone’s Screen on a Bigger Display

A phone screen works fine for checking a recipe, but watching a movie on it feels like sitting in the front row of a theater designed for ants. If your phone supports wired video output, USB-C can connect it to a television, computer monitor, or projector.

The setup usually requires a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable for an HDMI display. Connect the adapter to your phone, attach an HDMI cable, and select the appropriate input on the television. Compatible phones can mirror their screens, letting you display photos, presentations, websites, and other content on a larger screen. Some apps offer their own second-screen experiences instead of simply duplicating the phone’s display.

Before buying an adapter, check your phone’s specifications for external-display or DisplayPort support. The USB-C shape alone does not guarantee video output. Apple’s iPhone 15 series, for example, supports external displays through USB-C, but capabilities vary across phone models. A cable that works beautifully with one device may do absolutely nothing with another.

2. Move Photos and Videos Without the Cloud

Cloud storage makes sharing convenient, right up until a large video refuses to upload or a storage warning interrupts the process. A USB-C port can offer a more direct route by connecting your phone to compatible external storage.

Plug in a supported flash drive or portable solid-state drive, then use your phone’s file-management app to browse, copy, or move files. On compatible iPhones, the Files app can access supported external storage. Android phones may also recognize USB drives, although the exact experience depends on the device, file system, and available power. An adapter may help if your drive uses an older USB-A connector.

This option becomes particularly useful when traveling, recording lots of video, or trying to free up space before a major software update. It also gives you a way to carry large files without waiting for an upload. Just remember that connecting a drive does not automatically create a backup. Verify that your files copied successfully before deleting the originals, and disconnect the drive properly when your phone or file manager requires it.

3. Use Wired Headphones, Microphones, and Other Audio Gear

Wireless earbuds are convenient until their batteries die halfway through a phone call. USB-C offers another option: wired headphones that connect directly to the phone, without Bluetooth pairing or another battery to monitor.

Phones with compatible USB-C audio support can use USB-C headphones or a USB-C-to-3.5-millimeter headphone adapter. That adapter can bring older wired headphones back into rotation, provided it supports the phone’s audio requirements. A random adapter that fits the port may not work, so check compatibility before ordering one.

The port can also connect compatible external microphones, which makes it useful for recording interviews, filming videos, or capturing clearer audio in noisy environments. A microphone designed for a camera or computer may need a specific adapter to work with a phone. Check connector compatibility and whether the microphone needs external power. For anyone who records voice notes or video regularly, a suitable wired microphone can be a more useful purchase than another accessory promising to make everything sound professional.

4. Connect a Keyboard, Mouse, or Game Controller

Your phone already has a keyboard, of course. It also has a touchscreen, voice controls, and a collection of gestures that sometimes feel like secret handshakes. Still, physical accessories can make particular tasks much easier.

A compatible USB-C adapter or hub can connect accessories such as a keyboard, mouse, or game controller. Android devices often support wired peripherals, although compatibility varies by model and accessory. A physical keyboard can help with lengthy messages, while a mouse may improve navigation for certain tasks. A compatible controller can also provide a more familiar way to play mobile games.

Picture filling out a long form on your phone while balancing a cup of coffee nearby. A keyboard suddenly sounds less like an unnecessary gadget and more like a reasonable way to preserve your remaining patience. You could also connect a USB accessory for accessibility purposes, depending on the phone and device. Before buying a hub, check its supported connections and power requirements. Some accessories draw more power than a phone can comfortably provide, and not every phone supports every peripheral.

5. Give Another Device an Emergency Charge

A phone can sometimes lend power to another device through its USB-C port. That can come in handy when wireless earbuds, a friend’s phone, or another small accessory runs low on battery.

For example, Apple’s iPhone 15 and later models can charge compatible small devices through USB-C, including certain accessories that support USB Power Delivery. Apple lists output of up to 4.5 watts for this feature. That provides a useful emergency boost, not a replacement for a dedicated wall charger or power bank. Other phones may offer different charging capabilities, so check your manufacturer’s specifications.

The arrangement also depends on the connected devices and cable. A USB-C port does not guarantee that a phone can supply power to every accessory, and the phone giving up energy will lose some of its own battery life. If your phone is already running low, lending its remaining charge may simply move the problem from one device to another. Still, when a small accessory needs enough power to get through the rest of a trip, this feature can save the day.

Check the Port Before Buying Another Gadget

USB-C’s biggest inconvenience is also its most easily overlooked detail: the connector’s shape tells you very little about its capabilities. Some ports support only basic charging and data transfer, while others handle faster transfers, external displays, or more demanding accessories. Cables differ, too, so a familiar connector does not guarantee identical performance.

Start with your phone manufacturer’s specifications and look for the exact feature you want. If you plan to connect a monitor, confirm video-output support. For external storage, check the phone’s file-management capabilities and the drive’s compatibility. For faster file transfers, make sure both the phone and cable support the required data speed. The USB Implementers Forum explains that USB-C, USB data standards, and USB Power Delivery describe different aspects of the technology.

A modest accessory can unlock a genuinely useful function, but buying the wrong one creates another drawer full of cables nobody remembers purchasing. Check compatibility first, then buy only what your phone can actually use.

Which USB-C feature would you get the most use from: connecting your phone to a TV, moving files, using wired audio, or charging another device? And have you discovered a useful trick that deserves a spot on this list?
