Tips for Combating Poor Sleeping Habits

One of the biggest concerns many Americans face daily is poor sleep habits and not getting enough sleep. According to CBS News, approximately 70 million Americans experience chronic sleep deprivation regularly. There are some tips that you can do in your everyday life to ensure that you are getting the best sleep and improving your overall health.

Develop A Routine

The best way to manage your overall sleep health is to establish a daily routine. This means going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time. It is best to keep this routine even on days you are off so that it isn’t harder for you to get up when you need to be up. Before you go to bed, you want to prepare your body for bed, so develop a routine of tooth cleaning, face washing, and even applying body lotion to encourage sleep. There are some scents and essential oils you can add to aid your sleeping habits if you are comfortable with them.

Manage Pests

This may not have been something you were expecting on the list, but your sleeping health is affected if you have pests that bite you. Unfortunately, many living in apartments and condos where they share walls with others suffer from pests like bedbugs. They come out at night when you are sleeping, biting you and affecting your overall sleep. Once you have them, you could get several treatments with the best professionals to rid yourself of these bugs. According to Forbes, a female bed bug lays around 200 to 250 eggs throughout its four-month lifespan. Address these issues before the further impact your sleep!

Check in With Your Dentist

There are times when having extreme toothache could impact your ability to sleep and remain that way throughout the REM cycle. With the right care, it is expected that 50-75% of people could see real benefits from orthodontic treatments regularly. If your teeth are in good condition, you will not have to worry about them waking you up in the middle of the night, and you can enjoy better sleep health.

Upgrade Your Mattress

Many folks who suffer from poor sleep also sleep on poor mattresses that no longer provide the necessary support your body needs to get a restful night’s sleep. If you are not comfortable on your mattress and spend most of the night tossing and turning, you will be tired in the morning, even after sleeping for a full night. This isn’t good for your sleep or even back health, as some mattresses are designed to assist with back health. Invest in a better, firm mattress that provides full body support to sleep peacefully.

Turn Off The TV

Your body needs to adjust to the sleep cycle, and having the TV on with lots of lights and pictures going through the room could cause you to wake up. Also, new shows and programs come on through the night, so you can hear sounds that startle you and force you to wake up from the television. If you get better sleeping health from background noise, opt for a noise machine instead and calming sounds that are playing while the room is dark.

Turn Your Thermostat Down

It is easy for your body to rest when the room is at an average temperature, not too warm and not to cold. If you run your temperature warmer when awake, try turning down your thermostat at night to around 65 so that the temperature regulates throughout your home. This will also keep the HVAC system from coming on so much through the night, reducing the noise you hear.

If you haven’t already tried these tips to help with your sleep, implement them individually until you see your sleep improving. Once you determine what works best for you, keep that up to maintain good sleeping health.
