Should Couples Have to Pass a Compatibility Test Before Marrying?

The divorce rate in the United States remains to be 40% to 50% for first marriages. Many people have tossed around some ideas about what could be done to decrease the number of divorces. Some have suggested that a compatibility test before tying the knot would help decrease the number of marriages breaking up. While that thought is controversial, here are some things to consider.

1. Divorce Rates Suggest We’re Not Getting It Right

According to recent statistics, nearly half of all marriages end in divorce. While some couples beat the odds, many others cite incompatibility as the main reason they split. A compatibility test before marrying could uncover serious dealbreakers before rings are exchanged. From views on children to financial habits, these differences matter more than many couples realize. Preventing a bad match could mean fewer messy divorces and more long-lasting unions.

2. Love Isn’t Always Enough

It’s easy to be swept away by romance, chemistry, and big wedding plans. But long-term success depends more on shared values, emotional maturity, and communication styles than butterflies. A compatibility test before marrying might expose the cracks that attraction alone can’t fix. Love is powerful, but it needs structure, honesty, and alignment to thrive in the real world. The test isn’t about ruining the magic—it’s about adding logic to the emotion.

3. Personality Conflicts Can Wreck Relationships

Opposites may attract, but that doesn’t always make for a functional partnership. Some personality pairings are simply more prone to conflict, resentment, or emotional withdrawal. A psychological or behavioral compatibility test before marrying could identify areas of potential friction. With this insight, couples can either seek counseling or reconsider their future together. It’s not about labeling people—it’s about knowing how your puzzle pieces fit together (or don’t).

4. Finances Are a Major Source of Conflict

One partner saves, the other spends. One believes in joint accounts, the other insists on financial independence. These disagreements might seem small at first but often grow into huge sources of resentment. A compatibility test before marrying could explore financial philosophies, debt management, and long-term goals. Knowing you’re aligned—or learning where you’re not—could prevent future fights over money.

5. Tests Encourage Open and Honest Conversations

Many couples avoid tough conversations before marriage, assuming love will carry them through. But ignoring red flags or unresolved differences can lead to disaster later. Taking a compatibility test before marrying forces couples to confront the big stuff: religion, parenting, intimacy, and life goals. Think of it as structured honesty—helping you tackle the uncomfortable topics with clarity and support. A little awkwardness now could spare you years of frustration.

6. Compatibility Tests Already Exist—Just Not Legally

From premarital counseling to online quizzes, couples already seek out ways to gauge relationship health. But these tools are voluntary and vary widely in quality. If governments or marriage institutions offered a standardized compatibility test before marrying, it could become part of the marriage process—just like obtaining a license. It wouldn’t have to be mandatory, but even making it strongly recommended could change how we prepare for lifelong commitment.

7. Some Say It’s a Violation of Personal Freedom

Of course, not everyone loves the idea. Critics argue that enforcing a compatibility test before marrying steps into dangerous territory. Who decides what’s compatible? And should the government or any institution really have a say in personal matters of the heart? These are valid concerns. The key would be ensuring the test is advisory—not mandatory—and designed to empower, not control.

8. It Might Save People From Marrying for the Wrong Reasons

Some people marry out of pressure, loneliness, or fear of being alone. A well-designed compatibility test before marrying could serve as a gut-check, helping individuals pause and reflect. Are you marrying the right person, or just trying to escape being single? With clearer insight, couples might avoid tying the knot for all the wrong reasons. In this way, a test could be less about passing or failing and more about revealing true intentions.

Maybe the Real Test Is Taking the Time to Ask the Right Questions

At the end of the day, there’s probably no “one size fits all” fix to the divorce rates. However, the discussion about compatibility tests brings a more important point to light… Everyone needs to be more intentional about who they choose as a partner and, more importantly, who they choose to marry. Don’t just dive into marriage with the hope that everything will work out. Get to know them on a deeper level and make sure their goal is the same as yours: to build a marriage that will withstand the test of time.
