8 Things Men Store in the Garage That Attract Burglars

Garages are more than just a place to park your car. For many men, the garage is a storage hub, a workshop, and sometimes even a hangout spot. But what you keep in your garage can make it a target for burglars. Thieves know that garages often hold valuable items, and they’re usually easier to break into than the main house. If you’re not careful, your garage could be the weakest link in your home security. Here’s why you should pay attention to what’s inside—and what you can do to protect it.

1. Power Tools

Power tools are high on a burglar’s wish list. Drills, saws, sanders, and other equipment are easy to grab and sell. Many people leave these tools out in the open or on shelves near the garage door. This makes them easy to spot through windows or when the door is open. If you store power tools in your garage, keep them locked in a cabinet or toolbox. Mark them with your name or a unique ID. This makes them harder to sell and easier to recover if stolen.

2. Bicycles

Bikes are valuable and easy to steal. Thieves can spot them quickly, especially if you leave your garage door open even for a few minutes. Some bikes cost thousands of dollars, making them a big target. Always lock your bike to a fixed object, even inside the garage. Use a strong U-lock or heavy chain. If possible, store bikes out of sight, like behind a curtain or in a storage closet. This simple step can make a big difference in keeping your garage safe from burglars.

3. Sporting Equipment

Golf clubs, fishing gear, and other sports equipment are often expensive. Burglars know this. These items are usually stored in plain sight, making them easy to grab and go. If you have high-end gear, keep it in a locked cabinet or storage bin. Don’t leave it leaning against the wall or hanging on open racks. Consider labeling your equipment with your name or a unique mark. This can help deter theft and make it easier to identify if it’s stolen.

4. Lawn Equipment

Lawnmowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers are common in most garages. They’re also easy to sell and hard to trace. Many people leave them near the garage door for convenience, but this makes them easy targets. Store lawn equipment in a locked shed or behind a locked gate if possible. If you must keep them in the garage, secure them with a cable lock or chain. Don’t forget to lock the garage door itself, especially if you have a side door that’s easy to overlook.

5. Car Keys and Spare Keys

Some people keep spare car keys or even house keys in the garage. This is a big mistake. If a burglar gets into your garage, they can drive away with your car or get into your house. Never leave keys in the open or in obvious places like a hook by the door. Use a lockbox or keep keys inside your home. If you have a keypad entry for your garage, change the code regularly and don’t share it with people you don’t trust.

6. Electronics

Old laptops, speakers, and other electronics often end up in the garage. Burglars know this and will look for them. Even if the items are outdated, they can still be sold for parts. Store electronics in sealed boxes or bins, and keep them out of sight. If you’re storing valuable electronics, consider moving them inside the house. Don’t leave boxes from new electronics in the trash outside, as this can tip off thieves about what you own.

7. Alcohol and Collectibles

Some people use the garage as extra storage for alcohol, like cases of beer or bottles of wine. Others keep collectibles, such as vintage signs, coins, or memorabilia. These items can be worth a lot and are easy to carry. If you store alcohol or collectibles in your garage, keep them in locked cabinets or hidden from view. Don’t advertise what you have by leaving the garage door open for long periods.

8. Firearms and Ammunition

Storing guns or ammunition in the garage is risky. Burglars look for firearms because they’re valuable and easy to sell. If you must keep guns in the garage, use a heavy-duty safe that’s bolted to the floor. Never leave ammunition out in the open. Make sure your safe is locked at all times, and don’t share the combination.

Protecting Your Garage Means Protecting Your Home

Your garage is often the easiest way for a burglar to get into your home. The things you store there can make your house a target. Take a few simple steps: lock up valuables, keep the garage door closed, and don’t leave items in plain sight. These actions can make a big difference. Think about what’s in your garage right now. Is it worth the risk?
