6 Types of Cars That Should Only Be Driven On The Weekends

Not every car is built for daily grind duty. Whether due to high maintenance costs, extreme performance specs, or luxury-level pampering, some vehicles are better left in the garage during the workweek. Driving them only on weekends helps preserve their value, avoid wear and tear, and maintain their special factor. If you’re lucky enough to own one of these weekend cars, you might want to think twice before putting them through Monday traffic.

Add These to the Weekend Cars List ASAP

1. Exotic Sports Cars

Exotic sports cars like Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and McLarens are the definition of over-the-top performance and style. While thrilling to drive, they come with stiff suspensions, low ground clearance, and incredibly expensive maintenance routines. Daily city driving, potholes, and tight parking spaces aren’t kind to these machines. Plus, the constant attention they attract can be more of a headache than a thrill when you’re just trying to get to the office.

2. Classic Muscle Cars

Classic American muscle cars such as vintage Mustangs, Camaros, and Chargers offer a unique sense of nostalgia and power. However, they often lack modern safety features, fuel efficiency, and comfort tech found in newer cars. Daily use can stress their aging parts, especially if they’ve been meticulously restored. Driving these beasts occasionally helps preserve their condition and keeps maintenance costs manageable.

3. Luxury Convertibles

A high-end convertible like a Porsche 911 Cabriolet or Mercedes SL-Class is undeniably cool, but not always practical. They’re often not designed with weatherproofing or daily commuting in mind, especially in places with extreme temperatures. Constant exposure to sun, rain, and pollution can quickly wear down soft tops and expensive interiors. Not to mention, many luxury convertibles lack trunk space, rear-seat practicality, and ride comfort on rough city roads. Keeping these weekend cars tucked away for sunny, open-air drives extends their showroom appeal.

4. High-Mileage Performance Sedans

Powerful sedans like the BMW M5, Audi RS7, and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing combine practicality with track-level performance, but that performance comes at a cost. These machines often burn premium fuel quickly, require high-performance tires, and rack up repair bills that can make daily driving a financial risk. Frequent use can also dull their performance edge and reduce resale value dramatically.

5. Lifted Off-Road Vehicles

Tricked-out Jeeps, Broncos, and lifted trucks are fantastic off the beaten path, but they’re a handful on paved city streets. Large tires, suspension lifts, and aggressive modifications often result in poor fuel economy and handling. They’re also more difficult to park and maneuver, and some setups may not be legal or safe for highway driving. Weekend use allows you to take them off-road without sacrificing your weekday sanity. These weekend cars are meant for adventure, not traffic jams and grocery store parking lots.

6. Collector Cars and Rare Models

If you’re fortunate enough to own a limited-run or collector car like an Acura NSX, a Ford GT, or a Shelby Cobra, daily driving it may destroy its long-term value. These cars often appreciate in value when kept in pristine condition with minimal mileage. Exposure to daily hazards like accidents, weather damage, and even careless parkers can significantly reduce their worth. Driving them on special occasions keeps them exciting and helps retain their legacy status.

Enjoy the Ride—Just Not Every Day

Owning a high-performance or luxury car can be deeply rewarding, but using it daily can quickly take the magic (and value) out of the experience. Whether it’s due to upkeep costs, wear and tear, or impractical features, some cars simply thrive when driven sparingly. Keeping them in weekend-only rotation not only extends their lifespan but also ensures they feel special every time you turn the key. After all, absence makes the heart—and the throttle—grow fonder.

Do you own a car that only comes out on weekends? Share what it is—and why you keep it parked Monday through Friday—in the comments!
