6 Trucks With the Best Towing Capacity (And 3 That Disappoint)

Towing capacity is a critical factor for truck buyers who need to haul heavy loads, whether it’s for work, play, or both. The right truck should provide the power and stability to handle everything from camping trailers to construction equipment. While many trucks on the market boast impressive towing figures, not all of them meet expectations. As a subject matter expert on trucks and towing capacity, I can say these are six of the best (and three of the worst).

1. Ram 3500

The Ram 3500 has made a name for itself in the towing world. With the available 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, this truck offers a jaw-dropping towing capacity of up to 36,610 pounds when equipped with the right trailer hitch. The Ram 3500 also features a smooth ride and excellent interior features, making it a top choice for both work and play. Whether you’re pulling construction equipment or a large horse trailer, the Ram 3500’s towing power is unmatched.

2. Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD

Chevrolet’s Silverado 3500HD offers an impressive 36,000-pound towing capacity when equipped with its 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine. This truck is designed for those who need a reliable companion for the most demanding towing jobs. The Silverado 3500HD’s Duramax engine is known for its reliability, and with a variety of towing aids such as trailer sway control, it’s one of the safest options available.

3. Ford F-250 Super Duty

When it comes to raw towing power, the Ford F-250 Super Duty is a standout. With an available 7.3-liter V8 engine, the F-250 delivers an exceptional towing capacity of up to 20,000 pounds when properly equipped. Its robust construction, coupled with advanced towing technologies like Pro Trailer Backup Assist, makes it a favorite among those who need a workhorse for heavy-duty tasks.

4. GMC Sierra 2500 HD

The GMC Sierra 2500 HD may not have the massive towing numbers of its 3500 HD sibling, but it still impresses with a max towing capacity of 22,390 pounds when equipped with the 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine and a fifth wheel. Ideal for those who don’t need to haul extreme weights but still require high capability, the Sierra 2500 HD provides a comfortable and quiet ride, even when fully loaded.

5. Nissan Titan XD

The Nissan Titan XD may not be as well-known as some of its competitors, but it’s an underrated player in the towing game. Equipped with a 5.6-liter V8 engine, the Titan XD offers a towing capacity of up to 11,000 pounds. It’s a great option for those who don’t need a 3500-class truck but still require significant towing power. With its comfortable interior and tech-forward features, the Titan XD is a well-rounded choice for those who need both towing and daily comfort.

6. Toyota Tundra

For those looking for a more off-road-capable option that still delivers serious towing power, the Toyota Tundra stands out. With the 5.7-liter iForce V8 engine, the Tundra offers a maximum towing capacity of 10,200 pounds. While it might not have the brute force of some American heavyweights, the Tundra is a solid choice for anyone looking for a reliable, powerful truck that can handle both work and adventure.

The Disappointing Trucks

While many trucks excel in towing, a few fail to live up to the hype. Here are the three trucks that fall short in terms of towing capacity as far as I’m concerned.

1. Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger offers a respectable towing capacity of 7,500 pounds, which is more than adequate for a mid-sized truck. However, the Ranger feels underwhelming in a market with competitors offering higher towing numbers. Compared to the Toyota Tacoma, which can tow up to 6,800 pounds, the Ranger’s towing capacity doesn’t make it the top choice for those needing more power.

2. Honda Ridgeline

Honda’s Ridgeline is a great all-around vehicle for daily use and offers a comfortable ride, but it’s far from the best when it comes to towing. The Ridgeline’s 5,000-pound towing capacity is weak compared to its competitors. While the Ridgeline is perfect for light towing tasks and urban driving, those who need a truck for heavier hauls should look elsewhere.

3. Chevrolet Colorado

The Chevrolet Colorado is a solid mid-size truck, but its maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds doesn’t stand out. While the Colorado offers a great combination of off-road capability and everyday comfort, it simply can’t match the towing power of rivals like the Toyota Tacoma or the Ford Ranger when fully equipped.

Know What You Need Before You Tow

When shopping for a truck with towing capabilities, it’s essential to understand your specific needs. While some trucks, like the Ford F-250 and Ram 3500, are ready to haul extremely heavy loads, others like the Honda Ridgeline and Chevrolet Colorado are more suited for light-duty towing. By evaluating your requirements carefully, you’ll be able to choose the truck that delivers the power, performance, and safety features you need for a seamless towing experience.
