6 Things Nobody Tells You About Moving Across the Country

Moving across the country is the start of a life-changing adventure. It offers new opportunities, a new job, and a much-needed change of scenery. There are plenty of resources to inform you about moving across the country, including comprehensive guides on how to pack your stuff for the big move. However, there are quite a few things that go unmentioned. In this guide, we’ll tell you what no one tells you about moving to the other side of the nation.

1. Cost Considerations

There are several costs to consider. For example, if you plan on driving cross-country, you’ll spend money on gas, snacks, drinks, and other things. You also can’t spend all your time on the road, so you may spend money on a hotel. If your house isn’t done yet, you’ll have to pay for a storage unit for your things. There are 1.9 billion units of storage space in operation nationwide, but you still have to consider the additional cost.

2. Moving Truck Limitations

Hiring a professional moving company is popular, but you must realize you will arrive at the new house long before your stuff. According to federal service limitations, drivers can only drive 11 out of 14-hour shifts daily. That means your moving truck could take a couple of weeks to make it across the country, if not longer. Pack the necessities in suitcases to ensure the family has everything they need.

3. Emotional Toll

The first emotion that most people feel when they move to a new state is excitement. However, it doesn’t take long for that excitement to fade as new emotions take their toll. Feeling lonely and homesick is common because you miss your friends and family. Some people may feel disoriented as they adjust. Accept that these emotions are normal, and mentally prepare for the emotional toll that goes hand in hand with moving to a new state.

4. Moving Logistics

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of moving and start packing, but slow down. One of the most common things people don’t consider is the details. Researching the best routes to get to your new location is important. Determine how everything will be moved, like a second and third vehicle. You’ll also need to check the weather to ensure you aren’t driving through the mountains during a snowstorm. Take the time to plan every detail.

5. New Services

In your old home, you had the phone numbers for local plumbers and knew that the guy down the street was an exceptional painter. Starting over in a new town means you’ll need to know people who provide local services, such as babysitting and plumbing repairs. Parents must ensure they find a pediatrician for the kids before moving. The more you can do before driving to your new home, the easier the transition will be.

6. House Inspections

Before moving across the country, you must visit the new house. For example, one trip should include properly inspecting the house for small problems, such as leaks. Comfy Living says a minor leak can waste 10,000 gallons of water yearly. It’s best to have the house inspected and repaired before moving in. This can make moving less stressful and ensure the family is moving into a move-in-ready house.

Driving across the country with a suitcase in hand has a nostalgic vibe that most people fall in love with. However, there are quite a few things you need to know before moving to the other side of the nation. Remember that house inspections are important. Driving requires gas money, and people driving moving trucks for a professional company can only be on the road for less than half a day. More than anything, be prepared for the excitement to fade away. When you remember these things, you’ll enjoy a seamless cross-country move.
