6 Helpful Gaming Recruitment Tips

Are you a recruiter for a gaming company? Perhaps you’ve been outsourced, so you don’t have expert knowledge on the video game industry, and still need further insight on how to successfully recruit new talent for a video game company. Regardless of your recruitment experience, here are 6 useful tips for recruiting candidates in the gaming industry.

Ready?

Let’s dive right in!

  1. Know the games

Seems obvious, right? Even if you’re only the recruiter and not part of the games development team, it’s important that you know the games that the company you’re hiring for makes and develops. It would be a good idea to brush up on the company’s history, especially their most popular and most recent game titles. Whether that’s a console or mobile app game, it’s key that you know their products.

  1. Offer employee benefits

Speak to management about incorporating an employee benefits scheme if they haven’t done so already – and if they have, ensure that you make these benefits visible on job postings. Benefits and perks like group life insurance, flexible working hours, and more will surely attract the top talent to apply for roles within the company. This is applicable to companies of any industry – not just gaming!

  1. Search for candidate portfolios

If you’re struggling with low application rates, it might be wise to simply do some searching of your own. This could be on reputable sites like LinkedIn where you’ll certainly find many potential candidates, but don’t forget that some artists (if game artists are what you’re looking for) also post their work on the likes of Instagram. Just make sure you’re able to find an appropriate way to contact them – an Instagram DM is probably not the best option.

  1. Enhance social media presence of company

Social media is a useful tool in helping raise brand awareness and brand exposure of your gaming company, increasing the likelihood of a potential candidate finding your job posting. Leverage social media to improve your online presence on a variety of platforms, promoting job opportunities on these sites as well. Don’t forget that it might be more fruitful to utilise different platforms for different job postings, so keep this in mind.

  1. Start playing games yourself

How can you recruit in the gaming industry if you’ve never played games yourself? Immerse yourself in games to better understand the mechanics and language that is used within the industry. Not only can this help with building rapports with potential talent, but this can also help with your own knowledge of the video game industry itself and inform your future decisions regarding accepting or rejecting candidates.

  1. Network to find potential candidates

The video games job market is one that is continuously growing – in fact, the UK games development workforce grew 25% between April 2020 to December 2021. With this in mind, you’re bound to find people interested in working in game development by attending gaming conferences for game developers, or even encouraging your company to host events of their own – ever heard of Hackathons? Congratulations, you’re in a room full of people who have a clear passion for gaming, making your candidate search a little bit easier.
