10 Appliances That Shouldn’t Be Where They’re Installed in Most Homes

Have you ever walked into a friend’s house and noticed their microwave perched precariously above the stove, or a washer squeezed into a tiny bathroom corner? Appliance placement is something most of us don’t think about—until it causes a problem. Poorly placed appliances can waste energy, create safety hazards, and even shorten the lifespan of your expensive gadgets. The truth is, where you put your appliances matters just as much as which ones you buy. Here are 10 appliances that are often installed in the wrong spots in most homes, and how you can fix these common mistakes.

1. Refrigerator Next to the Oven

Putting your refrigerator right next to your oven is a classic appliance placement blunder. The heat from the oven forces your fridge to work overtime, using more energy and potentially shortening its lifespan. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, keeping heat-producing appliances away from your fridge can save you money on your energy bill. If your kitchen layout allows, try to keep at least a small counter or cabinet between these two appliances.

2. Microwave Above the Stove

It might seem convenient, but installing a microwave above the stove is not ideal for appliance placement. It makes the microwave harder to reach (especially for kids or shorter adults) and exposes it to steam and grease, which can damage the electronics over time. Instead, consider a built-in microwave at counter height or a dedicated microwave shelf for easier access and longer appliance life.

3. Washer and Dryer in Humid Bathrooms

Many homes, especially older ones, have washers and dryers installed in bathrooms. This is a poor appliance placement choice because the humidity can cause rust and electrical issues. Laundry appliances work best in dry, ventilated spaces. If you must keep them in the bathroom, invest in a dehumidifier and make sure the room is well-ventilated to protect your machines.

4. Dishwasher Far from the Sink

A dishwasher that’s not next to the sink is a recipe for mess and inconvenience. Good appliance placement means your dishwasher should be right next to or under the sink, making it easy to rinse and load dishes. If your current setup requires you to carry dripping plates across the kitchen, consider a remodel or at least a portable dishwasher that can be moved closer to the sink.

5. Toaster Under Cabinets

Toasters are often tucked under cabinets to save counter space, but this is a risky appliance placement. The heat and steam from the toaster can damage your cabinets and even pose a fire hazard. Always use your toaster in an open area, and store it away when not in use if you’re short on space.

6. Space Heaters Near Curtains or Furniture

Space heaters are lifesavers in winter, but placing them near curtains, furniture, or other flammable materials is a major safety risk. The National Fire Protection Association warns that space heaters are involved in 43% of home heating fires. Always keep at least three feet of clearance around your space heater for safe appliance placement.

7. Coffee Maker Next to the Fridge

It’s tempting to keep your coffee maker next to the fridge for easy access to milk, but this appliance placement can cause problems. The heat and steam from the coffee maker can make your fridge work harder, just like with the oven. Try to keep your coffee station on a separate counter or at least a few feet away from the fridge.

8. Freezer in the Garage

Many people put an extra freezer in the garage, but this is not ideal appliance placement unless your garage is climate-controlled. Extreme temperatures can make your freezer less efficient and even cause it to break down. If you must keep a freezer in the garage, look for models rated for “garage use” or consider insulating your garage.

9. Electric Kettle on Wooden Surfaces

Placing an electric kettle directly on a wooden countertop can damage the wood and warp it over time. Use a heat-resistant mat or tray under your kettle for better appliance placement, especially if you use it frequently. This simple step can protect your counters and extend the life of your kettle and kitchen surfaces.

10. TV in the Kitchen

It’s fun to watch TV while cooking, but the kitchen is full of heat, steam, and grease—all enemies of electronics. Poor appliance placement here can mean a shorter lifespan for your TV and more cleaning for you. If you want a screen in the kitchen, consider a small, wall-mounted model away from the stove and sink, or use a tablet that can be easily moved and cleaned.

Rethink Your Appliance Placement for a Smarter Home

A closer look at your appliance placement can make your home safer, more efficient, and more enjoyable. Small changes—like moving your toaster or rethinking where you keep your coffee maker—can significantly impact your daily routine and your wallet. Don’t let old habits or awkward layouts dictate where your appliances live. With a little planning, you can create a home that works smarter, not harder.
