Hyundai Recalls Nearly 95,000 Vehicles Over Fire Risk — Owners Told to Park Outside

Hyundai and Genesis owners are being warned to park certain vehicles outside and away from buildings because a defect involving the front power seats could cause a fire, even when the vehicle isn’t being driven.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Hyundai Motor America is recalling 94,622 vehicles due to power seat motors that may overheat when a seat adjustment switch becomes stuck.

The recall affects certain Hyundai Genesis and Genesis G80 sedans manufactured across several model years. The safety concern is significant because a fire could occur while a vehicle is parked or in motion, potentially putting occupants and nearby property at risk.

Which Hyundai and Genesis Vehicles Are Recalled?

The recall affects certain vehicles in the following model years:

  • 2015–2016 Hyundai Genesis
  • 2017–2020 Genesis G80

The recall includes approximately 54,644 Hyundai Genesis sedans and 39,978 Genesis G80 sedans.

However, not every vehicle from these model years is necessarily affected, and owners should check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to determine whether their specific vehicle is included.

The recall is identified as NHTSA campaign number 26V664000, Hyundai recall number 308, and Genesis recall number 035G.

What Is Causing the Fire Risk?

The problem involves switches that control the movement and height adjustment of certain front power seats.

According to recall documents, an external impact can damage or dislodge internal switch components, potentially leaving a seat adjustment control stuck in an activated position.

When that happens, the power seat motor may continue operating longer than intended, causing it to overheat.

Under certain circumstances, that overheating can result in a vehicle fire, including when the vehicle is parked.

Potential warning signs include a burning smell near the seat or power seat controls that stop functioning properly, although owners should not assume their vehicle is safe simply because these symptoms haven’t appeared.

Hyundai Has Reported Two Alleged Fires

Hyundai’s recall documentation identifies two alleged vehicle fires associated with the power seat issue.

According to published reports, the company first became aware of a potential problem in December 2021 after receiving information involving a 2018 Genesis G80.

Additional reports and investigations eventually led Hyundai to issue the recall in October 2026.

As of the company’s recall decision, no related crashes or injuries had been reported in the United States.

Although Hyundai estimates that approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles may contain the defect, the potential consequences are serious enough to warrant the parking precautions recommended for affected owners.

Owners Are Being Told to Park Outside

Until the safety issue has been repaired, Hyundai and NHTSA are advising owners of affected vehicles to park outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures.

That means avoiding attached garages, enclosed parking areas, and parking spaces immediately next to homes or other buildings whenever possible.

The precaution is especially important because the overheating condition could lead to a fire even when the vehicle is not being driven.

Owners should follow the manufacturer’s interim safety instructions rather than waiting for a visible warning sign or a malfunctioning seat.

Anyone who notices smoke, a burning smell, or another indication of a possible fire should move to safety and contact emergency services when appropriate.

When Will Hyundai Fix the Problem?

As of the October 2026 recall announcement, Hyundai had not finalized a permanent repair for the defective power seat components.

The manufacturer is continuing to develop a remedy, which will be provided to affected vehicle owners free of charge once available.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning December 7, 2026.

However, owners do not need to wait for the letter to check whether their vehicle is included in the recall.

Hyundai and Genesis dealerships can provide additional guidance about the recall, available information, and next steps while the repair is being developed.

How to Check Whether Your Vehicle Is Affected

Owners can determine whether their Hyundai Genesis or Genesis G80 is included by visiting the official NHTSA recall lookup tool.

Enter the vehicle’s 17-character VIN to search for open safety recalls associated with that specific vehicle.

The VIN is typically located near the driver’s side of the windshield, on the driver’s door jamb, or on vehicle registration and insurance documents.

According to the recall announcement, affected VINs became searchable through NHTSA beginning October 13, 2026.

Owners can also contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 or Genesis customer service at 844-340-9741 for additional assistance.

Don’t Wait for a Recall Letter to Take Precautions

A vehicle fire can create serious safety concerns and potentially lead to costly property damage, especially when a car is parked near a home or another vehicle.

For owners of affected Hyundai Genesis and Genesis G80 sedans, the immediate priority is following the manufacturer’s outdoor parking advisory until the recall repair has been completed.

Check your VIN through NHTSA, contact the manufacturer with questions, and watch for updates about the permanent repair.

Although Hyundai is developing a free remedy, taking the recommended precautions now can help reduce the risk while owners wait for a solution.
