Why Some of the Most Popular Fords Are Also the Worst

When you think about American cars, there are a few companies that come to mind, but Ford is likely the first. Over the years, the carmaker has been a trailblazer in the automotive industry. That said, no manufacturer is completely free of problems. Some of the most popular Fords have also had some of the most serious issues, especially in recent years. Here’s a look at seven vehicles that put Ford reliability issues on full display.

Ford Reliability Issues Plague Some Of The Most Popular Models

1. Ford Focus

The Ford Focus, especially models from 2012 to 2016, has been notorious for its problematic PowerShift dual-clutch automatic transmission. Many people have reported issues, some of which are alarming. Shuddering, slipping, and even delayed acceleration have all been tied to this transmission. Not only has this decreased consumer confidence in the Focus, but it can lead to some really pricey repair bills. Even though Ford has made recalls and has performed multiple software updates, the transmission issues persist. This ultimately led to class-action lawsuits and a big hit to the carmaker’s reputation, highlighting Ford’s reliability issues. Oh – and the Focus wasn’t the only car impacted either (we’ll get to that later).

2. Ford Explorer

Although popular, the Ford Explorer has not been exempt from issues either. Certain model years have been riddled with problems. Notably, the 2002–2006 models suffered from transmission failures and timing chain issues. More recent models haven’t been immune either; the 2020 and 2021 Explorers faced complaints about jerky shifting and slipping gears. These recurring issues have led to a decline in consumer trust and lower reliability ratings. While the Explorer offers space and comfort, its mechanical shortcomings can’t be overlooked.

3. Ford Escape

Like many other Ford models, the Escape has had its share of transmission problems. Models from 2013 to 2019 have been reported to have transmission problems, including rough shifting and complete failures. Additionally, some owners have experienced engine issues like coolant leaks, leading to overheating. These problems often result in costly repairs, diminishing the vehicle’s overall value proposition. Despite its appealing design and features, the Escape’s reliability concerns are hard to ignore.

4. Ford Edge

The Ford Edge offers a sleek design and a comfortable ride, making it a popular choice among crossover enthusiasts. However, certain model years have been associated with significant issues, such as transmission failures and engine problems. For instance, the 2013 Edge has been reported to require expensive repairs, including timing belt and water pump replacements. These unexpected costs can be a burden for owners, especially when they occur outside of warranty coverage. While the Edge has its merits, potential buyers should be aware of these potential pitfalls.

5. Ford Fiesta

To add to the list of Ford reliability issues, the Ford Fiesta, particularly models equipped with the PowerShift transmission, has faced similar issues to the Focus. Owners have reported erratic shifting, hesitation, and even complete transmission failures. These problems have led to numerous complaints and legal actions against Ford. Despite its compact size and fuel efficiency, the Fiesta’s reliability issues have overshadowed its advantages. Prospective buyers should exercise caution and thoroughly research before considering a used Fiesta.

6. Ford Fusion

The Ford Fusion has been praised for its design and driving dynamics, but certain model years have been less than stellar in terms of reliability. The 2010 Fusion, for example, has amassed thousands of complaints related to steering, transmission, and brake issues. These problems not only affect the driving experience but also lead to significant repair costs. While newer models have seen improvements, the Fusion’s checkered past remains a concern for used car shoppers. It’s essential to research specific model years to avoid potential headaches.

7. Ford Expedition

Yet again, a favorite among drivers, the Ford Expedition has had some serious safety issues. Recent models have been recalled due to brake system problems. Nearly 274,000 Expeditions were recalled because of a defect that could lead to a loss of brake function. Such safety concerns are alarming, especially for a vehicle often used to transport multiple passengers. While the Expedition has many strengths, these reliability issues warrant careful consideration.

Navigating Ford’s Popularity vs. Reliability

We can agree that many of these problems are quite serious. If you suddenly have transmission issues or, God forbid, your brakes fail, it could have some catastrophic consequences. Although these vehicles are popular in the carmaker’s lineup, Ford’s reliability issues stand out in certain model years. So, if you are in the market for a car, it’s important to be informed about potential problems like these before you sign on the dotted line.
