The Supply Chain Problems That Causes Repairs to Double in Cost Overnight

A lot of people think mechanic shops are “out to get them,” but after working as a mechanic for more than 10 years, I can tell you that’s not the truth for the most part. If you see sudden increases in your bill, it’s likely due to something out of our control. And it goes beyond just inflation and labor costs. Anybody who has ever been blindsided by a repair quote needs to know that the automotive industry is impacted by supply chain issues and other challenges, too. Here are some of the most common problems mechanics run into that have them cringing when they gave you the quote for repairs.

Part Delays Can Inflate Costs

One of the most common supply chain tricks is delaying the delivery of key parts. When a part is “backordered,” your vehicle sits idle, and some shops charge for storage, diagnostics, and extended labor. These delays aren’t always accidental; some suppliers intentionally slow shipments to prioritize high-margin clients. The longer your car stays in the shop, the more the labor costs stack up. What started as a $300 fix can balloon into a $600 headache overnight.

Limited Inventory Drives Premium Pricing

Repair shops often rely on a small network of suppliers, and when inventory is tight, prices spike. Suppliers know that scarcity creates urgency, so they mark up parts that are in limited stock. This tactic is especially common with specialty components or newer vehicle models. You might be told, “This is the only one available,” which justifies a 50–100% price increase. It’s a classic supply chain move: control the inventory, control the price.

Tariffs and Import Delays Shift Costs to Consumers

Global supply chain disruptions, including tariffs and import restrictions, often hit repair shops hard. But instead of absorbing those costs, suppliers pass them directly to consumers. A part that used to cost $100 might now be $180 due to international shipping delays or trade policies. These price hikes happen fast and without warning, catching customers off guard. The result? Overnight repair costs that feel like price gouging.

EV Complexity Adds Supply Chain Pressure

Electric vehicles (EVs) are changing the game, and not always for the better. Their parts are more specialized, harder to source, and often tied to proprietary systems. Suppliers take advantage of this by charging premium prices for EV components, knowing there’s little competition. If your EV needs a repair, expect longer delays and higher costs due to supply chain bottlenecks. It’s a growing issue that’s doubling repair bills for unsuspecting owners.

Labor Shortages Amplify the Problem

Even when parts are available, labor shortages can delay repairs and increase costs. Shops may need to outsource or pay overtime, and those expenses get passed to you. Suppliers sometimes exploit this by offering “rush” delivery at a premium, knowing shops are desperate to move vehicles. The combination of delayed parts and limited labor creates a perfect storm for inflated pricing. It’s not just about parts; it’s about timing and manpower.

Software Locks and Proprietary Tools

Modern vehicles often require proprietary software or tools to install even basic parts. Suppliers and manufacturers use this to their advantage, charging extra for access or licensing. That means a simple repair might require a $200 software unlock or a specialized tool only available from one vendor. As a result, something as simple as hitting a deer could wind up costing you thousands of dollars. These hidden costs aren’t listed upfront, but they show up on your final bill. It’s a supply chain tactic that turns routine fixes into expensive operations.

What You Can Do to Protect Yourself

Ask for part sourcing details before approving any repair. Request a breakdown of labor vs. parts and inquire about alternative suppliers. If a part is delayed, ask whether it’s truly necessary or if a workaround exists. Consider independent shops that offer more flexibility in sourcing and pricing. Awareness is your best defense against supply chain tricks that double your repair costs.
