7 Traits That Predict Marriage Success (Or Failure)

Over the last 10 years or so, the rate of divorce has been declining, while the rate of marriage has held steady. This may come as a surprise to many, especially because divorce rates were at an all-time high in the early 2000s. You may be wondering, what makes a marriage successful? There is no true formula to marriage success, but there are traits you can look for in a person that will help you have a better chance. So, here are seven things you might look for in a partner that will predict whether your marriage is built to last (or doomed for failure).

1. Effective Communication

Strong communication is the backbone of any successful marriage. Couples who can openly share thoughts, feelings, and concerns are more likely to resolve conflicts constructively. Poor communication, on the other hand, often leads to misunderstandings, resentment, and emotional distance. Active listening, empathy, and honesty are crucial skills that help partners feel heard and valued. Even during disagreements, effective communication allows couples to find common ground without resorting to personal attacks. If you and your partner struggle in this area, seeking counseling or practicing communication exercises can work wonders.

2. Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to understand and manage emotions, both your own and your partner’s. High EQ couples tend to handle stress, disagreements, and setbacks with grace and empathy. Partners with low EQ may struggle to regulate their emotions, leading to frequent arguments or emotional outbursts. A high EQ also fosters compassion, allowing couples to better support each other through challenges. Emotional intelligence isn’t fixed; it can be cultivated through mindfulness and self-awareness practices. In the long run, EQ can make or break the emotional stability of a marriage.

3. Shared Values

Marriages built on shared values are more likely to withstand life’s ups and downs. Couples who align on major topics like finances, family planning, and personal goals often experience fewer conflicts. Conversely, clashing values can cause significant strain, especially when decisions like parenting styles or career priorities come into play. While differences can be managed, a strong foundation of shared values helps couples navigate challenges as a team. Open discussions about what truly matters to both partners can strengthen this alignment. If your values diverge, compromise and understanding are key to bridging the gap.

4. Conflict Resolution Skills

It’s not about whether couples fight—it’s about how they fight. Healthy conflict resolution is a hallmark of successful marriages. Partners who approach disagreements with respect and a willingness to compromise tend to emerge stronger. In contrast, poor conflict resolution, marked by stonewalling, blame-shifting, or defensiveness, often leads to lingering issues. Learning to stay calm, focus on solutions, and avoid escalation is crucial for lasting harmony. Couples who struggle in this area might benefit from therapy or workshops focused on improving their conflict resolution techniques.

5. Trust and Honesty

Trust is the bedrock of any successful relationship. Without it, even the strongest bonds can crumble under suspicion and doubt. Honesty, transparency, and reliability are essential for building and maintaining trust. Partners who keep secrets, lie or act unpredictably create an environment of insecurity and fear. A consistent pattern of trustworthiness helps couples weather challenges without questioning each other’s intentions. Repairing broken trust takes time, effort, and often professional help, but it’s possible with a mutual commitment to honesty and accountability.

6. Adaptability

Marriage is a journey filled with unexpected twists and turns. Couples who can adapt to changing circumstances are more likely to thrive. Whether it’s adjusting to career changes, health issues, or parenting challenges, adaptability keeps the relationship resilient. Stubbornness and inflexibility, on the other hand, can lead to frustration and stagnation. Open-mindedness and a willingness to grow together allow couples to navigate transitions without losing their connection. Adaptability also fosters creativity, enabling partners to find new ways to keep their relationship fulfilling and exciting.

7. Sense of Humor

A good sense of humor can be the secret weapon for a happy marriage. Couples who laugh together create a positive atmosphere that strengthens their bond. Humor helps diffuse tension during conflicts and reminds partners not to take life—or each other—too seriously. A shared sense of humor fosters intimacy and keeps the relationship fun and engaging. On the flip side, a lack of lightheartedness can make everyday challenges feel heavier than they need to be. Finding joy and laughter in each other’s company can make marriage a delight, even during tough times.

Building a Stronger Future Together

As my wife and I enter our sixth year of marriage, I know that no marriage is perfect. However, if you have a good understanding of personality traits and what traits you should look for in a partner, it can make a huge difference. Be able to recognize your own strengths and weaknesses. Come into a relationship being ready to communicate, fully trust, and laugh through problems. This will help lay the groundwork for marriage success. Remember, marriage is a partnership. A truly successful relationship will be the result of hard work together.

Do you agree? Do these traits typically lead to success in relationships?
