7 “Life Hacks” That Can Get You Fined in Some States

You can’t scroll the internet without encountering a slew of life hacks. They are shared on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and just about every other platform on the web. However, not every hack is created the same. Some could actually get you in trouble with the law. Here are seven fairly popular “life hacks” that could lead to hefty fines in some states.

1. Spray-Painting License Plates for Better Toll Scanning

This hack claims you can avoid tolls or red-light camera tickets by painting over your license plate with a reflective spray. While it might seem like a sneaky shortcut, it’s illegal in many states, including California and Texas. Tampering with or obscuring a license plate is considered a misdemeanor in some jurisdictions and can carry fines of several hundred dollars. Law enforcement officers and toll authorities now use enhanced imaging to detect these tricks. What seems like a money-saver could land you in serious legal trouble.

2. Taping Over Check Engine Lights Before Emissions Tests

Some DIYers suggest covering or disabling dashboard warning lights—especially the check engine light—right before getting an emissions inspection. Not only is this dangerous, but it’s also considered fraudulent behavior in many states. In places like New York and Virginia, tampering with your car’s diagnostic system can result in fines or even loss of registration. Vehicles must pass inspections honestly for both environmental and safety reasons. This illegal life hack might seem harmless, but it undermines state regulations and risks others’ safety.

3. Making DIY License Plates for Bicycles and Scooters

DIY license plates are typically a no-no. It might be trendy to personalize your scooter or bike with a fake state-style plate, but in states like New Jersey and Florida, imitating official government documents can be considered illegal. The replicas could be confusing for law enforcement and can be downright misleading. Depending on the intent, fines can range from minor infractions to more serious penalties. It’s best not to chance it.

4. Using Fake “Reserved” Signs to Save Parking Spots

In cities with competitive street parking, some people create fake “reserved” or “no parking” signs to hold a spot. While it might work temporarily, it’s also illegal. In states like Massachusetts and Illinois, placing unauthorized signs on public property can result in fines or even towing of the vehicle associated with the spot. City inspectors and traffic enforcement regularly check for these fraudulent setups. This illegal life hack is a shortcut that often backfires.

5. Collecting Rainwater Without a Permit

Believe it or not, in some states, collecting rainwater is restricted or regulated. In places like Colorado and Utah, there are limits on how much rainwater you can collect and store without a permit. The reasoning? Water rights laws allocate natural resources, even rain, to specific property owners or municipalities. Violating these rules can result in citations or fines from local water authorities. What seems like a sustainable hack could actually violate long-standing water laws.

6. Tinting Windows With DIY Film Beyond Legal Limits

Tinting your car windows with DIY film kits is a common way to save money and gain privacy. But if the tint goes beyond the state’s legal limit, you could be fined or required to remove it immediately. Each state has different rules regarding how much light must pass through windows, especially the front ones. Police officers carry light meters to check tint percentages during traffic stops. This cost-cutting life hack could cost you even more in citations.

7. Driving With Hazard Lights in the Rain

Some drivers believe turning on their hazard lights while driving in heavy rain or fog makes them more visible. In several states, including Florida and Pennsylvania, this practice is actually illegal. Hazard lights are meant to signal that your vehicle is stopped or disabled, not actively moving. Using them improperly can confuse other drivers and emergency responders. While intended as a safety hack, it could result in a traffic ticket and potential accidents.

When Clever Crosses the Line

While some life hacks might be fun (and might even make your life easier), they’re not always legal. You should always be aware of what will fly and what won’t in your home state. So, before you move forward with trying to latest trend, it’s worth checking your local laws. No hack is worth the legal trouble you could run into.
