6 Clothing Choices That Make Men Easy Targets on the Street

As you get dressed in the morning, you are likely making decisions based on what feels comfortable, what you like to wear, or what is appropriate for the day’s activities. However, you may not consider that your clothing choices could be making you an easy target. No matter what your routine is or where you are, being aware of things that could draw unwanted attention to you could keep you safe. So, here are six clothing choices that could be putting a bullseye on your back.

1. Flashy Designer Labels

Wearing clothing plastered with luxury logos, like Gucci, Versace, or Louis Vuitton, instantly draws attention. These brands signal wealth, even if the item is fake or secondhand. Criminals don’t know or care; they see opportunity. Thieves often scan for recognizable branding to identify potential victims who might also carry high-end wallets, phones, or watches. Subtle fashion choices help you blend in and reduce the chance of being targeted on the street.

2. Loose or Baggy Clothing That Limits Mobility

Oversized clothing might be trendy, but it also makes you less agile if someone tries to grab or chase you. Baggy pants, long coats, or untied shoes can slow your reaction time, especially in dangerous areas. Pickpockets also prefer targets wearing loose clothing because it’s easier to slip a hand into pockets unnoticed. A more fitted outfit not only looks sharper but also improves your ability to move quickly and stay alert. Choosing mobility over style can be the difference between escape and confrontation.

3. Flashy Jewelry and Expensive Watches

Wearing flashy jewelry or sporting a high-end watch is meant to draw attention. Unfortunately, sometimes it catches the attention of the wrong person. It practically announces, “I have money.” And, even if you’re not carrying cash, a criminal might just take the jewelry off of you and sell it. Even if your accessories aren’t real (but they are still flashy), they can still make you a target for theft or assault. Ultimately, it’s always better to keep valuables subtle or tucked away.

4. Clothing With Obvious Tourist or Sports Logos

Clothing that screams “tourist” makes you stand out to local scammers and petty criminals. Shirts with city names, resort logos, or major sports teams instantly mark you as someone who may not know the area well. Burglars notice tourists because they’re often distracted, carrying cash, and less likely to fight back. Even something as innocent as wearing your hometown team’s jersey can make you look like an outsider in a rival city. When in doubt, go for neutral, low-profile outfits that don’t reveal where you’re from.

5. Expensive Sneakers or Limited-Edition Footwear

Sneaker culture has made shoes a major status symbol, and criminals know it. Limited-edition Jordans, Yeezys, or rare Nikes can resell for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars. Wearing them in the wrong neighborhood is like walking around with a price tag on your feet. Thieves target these items specifically, often following victims from malls or train stations. Unless you’re headed somewhere secure, leave your collectible kicks at home and opt for something practical.

6. Business Attire in the Wrong Setting

A well-tailored suit has its place, but in the wrong setting, it might send a different message. Thieves might associate this type of formal clothing with wealth. They could assume that you’re carrying something valuable, like a laptop, a smartphone, or cash. Also, have you ever tried to run in a suit? It can be very limiting in terms of mobility. At the end of the day, it’s always better to try and blend in with your surroundings. Standing out in a nice suit might get you unwanted attention.

Dress Smart, Stay Safe

Your clothing choices don’t just affect how you’re perceived. They can affect your personal safety. Dressing down, staying alert, and keeping your valuables discreet go a long way toward preventing trouble. The goal isn’t to live in fear but to avoid advertising yourself as an easy target. Criminals look for confidence, awareness, and subtlety just as much as they look for style.
