15 Of The Craziest Things I’ve Seen In Houses On Zillow

Scrolling through Zillow can be like going on a treasure hunt—you never quite know what you’ll find behind that “For Sale” sign. While some listings showcase beautifully staged homes, others reveal bizarre design choices that make you scratch your head. From carpeted bathrooms to standalone toilets sitting alone in unfinished basements, the internet is full of jaw-dropping real estate oddities. These strange features are both entertaining and a reminder that not every renovation idea should make it past the blueprint stage. Let’s dive into 15 of the craziest things I’ve seen in houses on Zillow that prove truth is stranger than fiction.

1. Carpet in the Bathrooms

Carpet in the bathroom might have seemed cozy decades ago, but today it raises more eyebrows than compliments. The problem, of course, is that bathrooms are wet spaces, and carpet isn’t exactly moisture-friendly. Beyond the mold and mildew risks, it’s just plain unpleasant to think about what might be lingering under those fibers. Zillow shoppers frequently encounter homes where the carpet looks decades old, stained, or oddly placed right next to the toilet. While it may have been trendy once, modern buyers usually see this as a big red flag.

2. A Second Weird Kitchen in the Basement

Finding a second kitchen in a home isn’t unusual if it’s set up for entertaining or an in-law suite. But some basements feature strange, half-finished kitchens that seem more like a science project than a usable cooking space. You’ll see mismatched cabinets, random appliances, and sometimes even no ventilation at all. These setups are confusing because they don’t seem functional or safe. On Zillow, these basement kitchens spark more laughter than offers.

3. Standalone Toilets in the Basement

One of the strangest Zillow finds is the infamous basement toilet—sitting in the open, no walls, no door, and no privacy. Homeowners may have added them for convenience, but they feel more like an afterthought than a design choice. Imagine hosting guests and pointing them downstairs to a toilet in the middle of the floor. It’s unsettling, impractical, and almost always ends up on social media for laughs. Privacy should always be non-negotiable in a bathroom.

4. Indoor Swimming Pools in Living Rooms

Some homeowners decide that the backyard isn’t good enough for a pool and place one indoors—right in the living room. While the idea sounds luxurious, in reality, it often looks like a hotel lobby gone wrong. Zillow listings with these features usually highlight the pool first, but buyers worry about moisture damage and high maintenance costs. It’s a bold move, but rarely practical. Unless you’re planning to swim while watching TV, this design is better left outside.

5. Hallways That Lead to Nowhere

Every so often, a listing reveals hallways that simply stop, ending in a blank wall. These unfinished architectural quirks leave buyers puzzled about what the builder originally intended. Some may have been part of renovation plans that never materialized, while others feel like outright mistakes. Either way, it’s awkward to have wasted square footage that serves no purpose. Zillow browsers often comment on these dead-end designs with amusement.

6. Garages Converted Into Bedrooms

Turning a garage into a bedroom isn’t unheard of, but sometimes the execution leaves much to be desired. Zillow listings often show carpeting laid directly over the concrete or bedrooms that still feature garage doors. Without proper insulation or permits, these rooms are uncomfortable and not up to code. It’s one of those quick fixes that makes a house harder to sell. Buyers usually see it as a problem rather than a perk.

7. Kitchens With Carpet Flooring

As questionable as carpet in bathrooms is, carpet in kitchens isn’t much better. Zillow shoppers occasionally find homes where the entire cooking space is covered in fabric flooring. Not only is it unsanitary, but it’s also impossible to clean properly when spills happen. A room designed for food prep deserves hard, washable surfaces. This is one quirky design that buyers almost always plan to rip out immediately.

8. Bedrooms Without Windows

It’s not uncommon to find basement bedrooms on Zillow, but sometimes these rooms lack even a single window. This creates safety concerns since building codes often require an egress window for fire safety. Beyond that, a windowless bedroom feels claustrophobic and uninviting. Natural light makes a huge difference, and its absence is a major turnoff. Zillow browsers usually call these “dungeons” rather than bedrooms.

9. Confusing Open Floor Plans

Open-concept living is trendy, but some listings take it way too far. Zillow often reveals homes where walls were removed without thought, creating huge, awkward spaces that lack flow. Imagine walking into a home where the kitchen, dining, and living area all blend into one cavernous hall. It feels less like a cozy home and more like a warehouse. Buyers may love openness, but they also want functionality.

10. Overly Themed Rooms

Some Zillow listings show entire rooms dedicated to one theme—like jungle wallpaper, floor-to-ceiling pink shag, or even medieval castles. While fun for the homeowner, these choices can overwhelm buyers who prefer a blank slate. It’s difficult to imagine living in a house when every room feels like a stage set. Zillow browsers often chuckle at these rooms but rarely see them as move-in ready. Excessive themes almost always become remodeling projects.

11. Bathrooms With Multiple Toilets

Believe it or not, some homes on Zillow feature bathrooms with two or even three toilets side by side. While it might save time in theory, the lack of privacy is confusing at best. These setups are often the result of strange remodels or repurposed commercial spaces. Most buyers prefer functionality over novelty. It’s one of those “why does this exist?” moments on Zillow.

12. Spiral Staircases in Tiny Spaces

Spiral staircases can be stylish, but they often pop up in homes where they clearly don’t belong. On Zillow, it’s common to see them crammed into tight hallways or awkwardly leading to unfinished attics. While they save space, they’re impractical for moving furniture or daily use. Buyers may find them charming at first glance but soon realize they’re a hassle. They’re one of those design elements that look better in photos than real life.

13. Showers in Kitchens

Few things shock Zillow browsers more than stumbling across a shower installed directly in a kitchen. While it might have been a creative attempt at efficiency, it feels unsanitary and confusing. Imagine cooking dinner while someone’s taking a shower a few feet away. These setups are usually a sign of poorly executed DIY projects. Buyers almost always view them as a dealbreaker.

14. Oversized Chandeliers in Small Rooms

Sometimes homeowners go all out with lighting, but size really does matter. Zillow often features dining rooms or bedrooms with chandeliers so large they overwhelm the space. Instead of feeling elegant, the room looks cramped and out of proportion. It’s a reminder that balance matters in design. What works in a ballroom doesn’t work in a 10×10 bedroom.

15. Random Toilets in Closets

In addition to basement toilets, some Zillow homes surprise buyers with toilets tucked into closets or laundry rooms. These odd placements usually come from quick renovations where space was limited. While functional, they’re far from appealing. Buyers immediately factor in the cost of removing or relocating them. It’s one of the stranger design quirks that makes for a funny Zillow screenshot.

Why Zillow Oddities Keep Us Clicking

Scrolling through bizarre Zillow listings is part entertainment, part education. These unusual homes remind us of the importance of thoughtful design and functionality in every space. While some quirks are easy to fix, others highlight costly mistakes that could scare off buyers. At the same time, these listings provide endless amusement for house hunters and online browsers alike. Sometimes, the craziest features are what make Zillow so addictive.
