What keeps me going is humor. I try to see the humor in everything at work, especially when there doesn't seem to be any. As Scott Adams has shown, the corporate workplace is hilarious, if you just take a detached view. I do my best, but never ever do I expect it to make any sense. Life is way too short to take one's day job seriously! As a result, I get along with mostly everyone and hardly ever send anyone away mad.

This is exactly what I've been relearning over the past couple of weeks. I suppose I intuitively knew to keep my discontent to myself in the beginning because I set an example for my coworkers, but I let my guard down a bit too much during some particularly rough periods in my personal and professional life. Unfortunately, my joining in the discontented grumbling had an exponentially negative effect. I've learned that even if it's difficult to consistently take the moral high road and encourage positive behavior while not belittling legitimate concerns, it's much better than the alternative.

I really needed to read this today as I am feeling the early stages of burnout in my own job. By the way, in a past life I worked on a business systems analysis team. I spent about half my time working with our product team on demos, marketing, etc, and the other half writing up business specification documents for our development team. It was a great job, but the company's pay scale was lousy, so I moved on to greener pastures. I read a lot of similarities into the description of the trials and tribulations in your own career.
