I couldn’t help myself. I applied for the AmEx card
Yep, the same guy who complained that he couldn’t handle all his accounts just signed up for the American Express Business Gold Rewards Card (EXPIRED OFFER) to get the $250 bonus rewards. I do also get a commission for each application, including my own, and that may be the downfall for my attempts at uncluttering my finances.
You can read more about the AmEx offer at my post from last week. Basically, it’s a business card, but you can apply as a regular individual. With your first purchase (heck, buy a pack of gum), you’ll be credited with 25,000 bonus points, which can be converted into $250 in gift certificates, or a $125 statement credit.
A few of you have already taken advantage of this offer, but I must warn you to not sign up for credit cards if you are not responsible with your spending. I plan on using the card for the bare minimum in order to get my bonus points, and then cancel within the first year. Otherwise, year 2 will bring a $125 annual fee (waived for the first year). So, be responsible with your credit, or else you could end up like me: $20,000 in credit card debt at age 22. Don’t be an idiot.
Oh yeah, you can now track my progress of climbing out of credit card debt via the debt scales in the sidebar. I added scales for credit card, student loan and auto loan debts.

Ah. Its free money almost –provided you use the credit card responsibly. I trust you will do just that!
I applied for this through your site. I am looking forward to the rewards, but just an FYI for other potential applicants, beware if you own another AmEx card.
I use my AmEx as a long-term low-interest debt (3.99% for the length of my balance transfer) but was shocked to log in and make my monthly payment to see that they charged me $10 to link this card with my new “Business” account. I was not aware of this charge, though I’m sure it’s probably outlined in the T&C. I may call to object. Still, the $10 will be under the 19.95 percent interest category that will not get paid off for a few more years….And of course they apply payments to the lowest interest first so I’m out of luck, I expect.
Any advice?
Michelle, did you request to link this card to your existing account? I would call and speak with a manager and ask that the $10 charge be refunded. If they come back and say it’s in the agreement, then ask specifically where. I would bet, though, that they’re going to let the $10 pass rather than anger a business card customer.
I called and it was a charge to link my personal “membership rewards” with the business account. They said it could be reversed, but it took two calls and a bunch of transfers…argh. They did this without asking.
They are issuing a $10 credit, but now I just have to wait and see whether the charge/credit negate each other or if the credit goes toward my $1,400 and the $10 gets charged as a purchase. They said they can fix it if it credits the wrong place.
I’m looking forward to getting the $250 GC. Just got to use the biz card now that this is all cleared up.
Thanks!
