Got my Amex card. Activation was simple and flashy

Posted by Clever Dude | July 20, 2007 .

This will probably be one of the last posts on the matter (maybe just one more next week), but I wanted to let you all know that activation of my new American Express Business Gold Card was quick and efficient. I applied for this card since I’ll get $250 in gift certificates (or 25,000 miles or a $125 statement credit) with just a single purchase (e.g. a pack of gum) (OFFER EXPIRED).

I had the option of either activating by phone or online; I chose online. AmEx’s online activation is pretty sleek, and very advanced compared to other cards. It even has a pretty talking lady to guide me through some stuff. The only thing I really needed guidance on was finding the Card ID (CID), but she wasn’t around for that issue. I thought it was the 3 digit number on the back, but it turns out the CID was the 4 digit number hiding underneath the activation sticker.

So, if you know you can handle having a credit card with no preset spending limit, then go ahead and apply for the American Express Business Gold Card. You don’t need to be a business to apply. Just use your name as the business and your SSN as the tax ID (it’s legit). However, if you have problems with spending, or getting out of debt, then don’t apply until you’ve learned your lesson!

I don’t know Clever, I heard you preaching simplicity and that to many accounts were giving you a headache. I know it is hard to quantify, but how much do you think the added stress and lack of simplicity is costing you? More than the $250? I know know for myself self, extra accounts can be draining, especially subconsciously.

    Just keeping you honest :)

@HappyRock: Thanks for reminding me! Yeah, I want to reduce my financial clutter, but I just couldn’t turn down the $250 bonus. Granted, if it was only $50 or so, then it wouldn’t be worth my time.

I still expect to cancel at least 3 cards in the next 3 months though.

CD, I got this card as well man! I actually referred myself on it which hooked me up with an extra $200 cash bonus, cha-ching! We don’t get our 25,000 bonus points until 6 - 8 weeks AFTER our first statement comes in, kinda lame we have to wait. I am going to probably get a pair of oakleys with my points :P
