Get 5% Cash Back on Home Improvement and Clothing Purchases!
Since paying off our credit card debt last September, we’ve kept using credit cards for the convenience, tracking capabilities and most importantly the rewards. However, we pay all our credit card debt off each month (unless it’s at 0% like my tuition bill) and I advise the same for you.
So if you’re a wise spender and want to get more bang for your buck, take a look at these Discover Cards that are currently offering 5% cash back on clothing and home purchases (on up to $400 in purchases) from the following types of stores:
- Department Stores
- Clothing Stores
- Home Improvement Centers
- Lawn & Garden Centers
Personally, I plan on doing a lot of home improvements this spring and summer and saving 5% on all those Home Depot and Lowes purchases will definitely help! So here are the various cards. They all offer 5% cash back on rotating categories 4 times per year. Next quarter (summer) is Gas and Hotels:
Discover® More(SM) Cards
Discover® More(SM) Card
Discover® More(SM) Card - Monogram
Discover® More(SM) Card - Sealife Collection
Discover® More(SM) Card - Wildlife Collection
Discover® More(SM) Card - Clear
Discover® More(SM) Card- American Flag
Discover® Student Cards
Discover® Student Card
Discover® Student Card - Clear
Discover® Student Card - Tropical Beach
Discover® Student Card - Monogram Collection
As I’ve said before, if you can’t manage your finances responsibly or can’t currently pay off your credit card debt each month, then you shouldn’t be getting more credit cards. Only apply if you’re a responsible consumer.

Great card! We also use two Chase Freedom cards for 3% back on Cell Phone, TV Cable, Fast Food, etc. And Citi Drivers Select card for 6% back on Food Stores, Drug Stores, and Gasoline (6% is for first 12 months, then 3%), this card also pays $0.01 for every mile you drive in your primary vehicle (essentially free oil changes).
Really enjoy this blog!
I would love to switch to a different rewards card. Right now I have a Delta miles card, but I would like a cash back reward.
Since I may be applying for a mortgage in the next 6 - 8 months, I am hesitant to do anything to my credit report (which took a long time to rebuild!).
path,
i just got my first mortgage, and like you, i was worried about my number.
just make sure to cancel any cards you don’t use, and to make sure to be relativly debt free
Closing cards will increase your balance to limit ratio and therefore lower your credit score. Do not close accounts. Very bad advice!
@Aaron and Chris, I was going to reply in a different way. Chris also said to be relatively debt free, which means a lower limit doesn’t matter since you don’t have debt on the cards. My angle was that you don’t want to have other credit activity (new cards, removed cards, etc.) when you’re going for something big like a car or home loan.
Path,
If it will still be 6-8 months before you begin the loan process, go ahead and get the cash back card you want. Your score may go down a few points for the first four months or so until you establish a repayment history with your new account, but overall you should be more than fine to get that card. I’ve seen people buy new cars at almost the same time as a new home and it has had little to no affect on their credit.
I’ve heard you mention that you put your tuition on a 0% interest card. I’m looking to start school in the fall and would like to do the same thing, can you recommend a card with an initial 0% interest for the first year? Thank you!
Kristen,
