Another helpful tip re Tip #4: I read that if you fill a plastic water bottle with sand, rocks, etc. (something to give it weight) and place it in your toilet's tank that it will then cause less water to be used per flush.

an immediate member of my family follows number 4, much to my annoyance because when left for extended times it not only makes the bathroom smell but leaves spots in the toilet bowl permanently stained that not even heavy duty brand name (and very un-green) chemicals cant take out. i am strongly against your 4th suggestion. there are other ways to be green and save money. for instance - why am i the only one i know who uses a clothes line? not even my most hippie-ish friends were using clothes lines until i reminded them of that option, which by the way, dry the clothes faster and makes the clothes smell better than when done in the dryer (which i've used for only 3 hours in a year and a half, yay for me!). uhm, also... clothes line? it's free. entirely. FREE. use fans in the windows instead of air conditioning. as long as the temp is below 90 we have fans in the windows and it works wonderfully thanks to the big old trees surrounding our house that keeps the sun mostly off of our property. we don't get much of a view by keeping those trees but i don't care since i get to laugh every time the electricity bill comes in. in the winter we use a heater that runs off of recycled & compressed saw dust pellets, which is again extremely efficient, cheap, and greener than green. you can buy them at lowes for about a thousand bucks but they do pay for themselves quickly. we heat the entire house with just one of those, all winter long and it costs us almost nothing for the recycled pellets. i could go on and on but to make a long story short - theres thousands of things you could do that are greener and at the same time save you tons of money. you just have to keep your eyes and ears open looking for stuff that fits your lifestyle and DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Rob: I know this reply is way late, but I was looking at this article for something else and wanted to reply. We do have a thermal blanket on the heater and it is turned down to 120 already. So we're not bringing the temp up too high or for too long.

Also, we're running the power during off-peak hours (we're on a time metered service), so we pay a few cents less per Kw used.

I agree with almost all you posted here, but I question the electronic water heater timer.
I just wonder if it takes the water heater more energy to bring the water BACK up to temperature when coming off an off cycle, versus the energy required to maintain a given temperature. On that note, turn down your water heater to 120 instead of 140,.. are you really going to notice the difference?. Also, wrapping your water heater with insulation is also a good practice to make it more efficient.
